From 100 to 1,200 employees without building an HR department: running the HR function for 1K Kirana Bazar

As 1K Kirana Bazar grew its workforce twelvefold, TNSL ran its entire HR function, including HR operations, statutory compliance and manpower vendor management, with a dedicated team of three and weekly on-site leadership.

The challenge

1K Kirana Bazar was preparing to grow fast, from about 100 employees to more than a thousand. An HR set-up that works for 100 people breaks at 1,200: records, documentation, payroll coordination, statutory obligations and employee queries all multiply, and inconsistent practices creep in as teams and locations expand.

The business also relied on several manpower vendors, each needing oversight to make sure their workers were documented and their statutory dues paid. And leadership needed senior HR guidance on structure and governance, not just administrators.

Building a full in-house HR department, with its own HR head, ahead of that growth would have been slow and costly.

What TNSL did

Became the HR function. Instead of advising from the outside, TNSL ran HR end to end: HR operations, workforce administration, compliance and vendor coordination, under one operating framework.

Put a dedicated team in place. Three TNSL HR professionals worked only for 1K Kirana Bazar, giving the business one consistent point of contact for every people matter and a team that knew its operations.

Added senior leadership every week. Arun Sehrawat, a TNSL Director, visited the client about once a week to guide HR priorities and governance, work with the business leadership and resolve important issues. The client got senior HR judgement without hiring an HR head.

Brought manpower vendors under one roof. TNSL managed the company’s manpower vendors as part of the HR mandate, giving the client a single view of its whole workforce and making sure vendors met its standards and their legal obligations.

Kept compliance inside daily operations. Statutory compliance for employees and vendor workers was built into routine HR work, and scaled as the workforce grew, rather than being checked only when problems arose.

Results

  • Workforce grew from about 100 to about 1,200, with TNSL running HR throughout.
  • A complete HR function without building an equivalent in-house HR department.
  • Senior HR leadership every week through TNSL’s Director, alongside a dedicated delivery team.
  • One view of the whole workforce, with manpower vendors managed within the HR function.
  • Compliance maintained throughout the scale-up.

Why it matters

A business should not have to build a large HR department before it can build a large workforce. A dedicated outsourced team with senior oversight gave 1K Kirana Bazar the HR capability each stage of growth needed.
