The cluster

Eastern India’s oldest industrial heartland.

Industry along the Hooghly began in the nineteenth century with jute mills and engineering works, and Howrah’s foundries and workshops once earned it the name Sheffield of the East. Today the region adds power generation, electrical goods, FMCG, steel structures and food processing, with newer estates at Uluberia, Kalyani and Bantala.

Employers here deal with established unions, long-serving workforces and detailed state rules. They need contractors who know West Bengal’s wage zones, Professional Tax and Labour Welfare Fund, and who keep every register in order.

Questions employers ask about staffing in Kolkata–Howrah

How quickly can TNSL deploy contract workers in Kolkata–Howrah?

It depends on the numbers, skills and shifts. As a guide from our own work: for a greenfield cable plant near Ahmedabad we mobilised about 200 workmen in three months, and for an FMCG plant in Aligarh we deployed 125+ workers in 45 days. We agree a ramp-up plan with you before the first deployment.

What is the minimum wage for contract workers in Kolkata–Howrah?

In West Bengal, the minimum wage for an unskilled worker (Zone A: municipal corporations, municipalities, notified areas and development authority areas) is ₹10,558 a month (₹406 a day), with higher rates for semi-skilled and skilled workers. The full table, with the effective date and source, is on this page.

Do Professional Tax and Labour Welfare Fund apply in West Bengal?

In West Bengal, Professional Tax applies and Labour Welfare Fund contributions apply. PF and ESI apply everywhere. TNSL deducts and deposits every applicable due and shares the supporting records and challans with you as agreed.

Do you understand West Bengal’s compliance requirements?

Yes. We apply the state’s Zone A and Zone B wage rates, Professional Tax and half-yearly Labour Welfare Fund correctly, keep registers and returns in order, and share every challan with you.

As the principal employer, what is my liability for contract workers?

Under contract labour law, the principal employer must ensure contract workers are paid on time and that PF, ESI and other dues are deposited; if the contractor fails, the liability can fall on you. TNSL removes that risk by paying on time, depositing every due, and keeping licences, registers and challans audit-ready for your inspection.
