A Global Capability Centre is an offshore unit owned by a global company that delivers technology, engineering and business services for the parent’s worldwide operations. India now hosts 2,117 of them, employing about 2.36 million professionals, with revenue of about $98.4 billion in FY26.
Today’s centres are no longer back offices. New GCCs increasingly start with product or portfolio mandates, run centres of excellence in AI, data and cybersecurity, and have site leaders who hold global responsibilities. That raises the bar for every hire, from the site leader down.
GCCs differ in who owns and runs them, and in what they do for the parent company.
The parent company sets up and runs its own Indian entity from day one, and hires and manages the team directly.
A partner builds and runs the centre for an agreed period, then transfers the entity, people and processes to the parent.
The parent owns the entity but relies on partners for hiring, HR, payroll, compliance and facilities, especially in the first years.
Software development, product engineering, R&D, testing and IT infrastructure for the global business.
Finance and accounting, procurement, HR operations, customer operations and supply chain support.
Data, AI, cybersecurity and digital centres of excellence that build capability for the whole group.
Centres that combine several of these mandates and act as a second headquarters for the global company.
Number of GCCs per city. These six cities hold about 94% of India’s GCCs; Bengaluru alone has about 29%. Source: Vestian, July 2025.
The next wave of GCCs is moving beyond the six metros. Emerging cities already host more than 220 GCC units and are growing at nearly 11% a year, and their share of India’s GCCs rose from 5% in 2019 to 7% in 2025.
Companies choose these cities for 20–25% lower operating and talent costs and lower attrition, often as a second site next to a metro hub. Jaipur is known for finance and accounting talent, and Coimbatore for engineering, testing and healthcare operations.
