Fixed-term employment lets a company hire people directly for a defined period, without a permanent commitment. The Labour Codes, in force since 21 November 2025, recognise it across all sectors and give fixed-term employees the same terms as permanent staff.
TNSL helps in two ways: it hires fixed-term staff for you and runs their contracts, payroll and compliance; or it employs people on fixed-term contracts on its own payroll for the length of your project.
Work with a defined start and end.
Plant set-ups, system implementations and other work with a clear end date.
Festive demand, harvest seasons and production peaks.
Long leave, secondments and roles that are open while a permanent hire is made.
Screened for skills, documents and fitness before deployment, and replaced quickly if someone leaves.
What employers must provide to fixed-term employees, as of November 2026.
Fixed-term employment is direct employment under a written contract for a fixed period, as defined in the Code on Industrial Relations, 2020. It is different from contract labour supplied by a contractor.
Hours of work, wages, allowances and other benefits must be no less than those of a permanent worker doing the same or similar work.
Fixed-term employees receive the statutory benefits available to permanent workers in proportion to their period of service, including PF and ESI where applicable.
Under the Code on Social Security, 2020, fixed-term employees qualify for gratuity after one year of service, instead of five, paid pro rata. Ministry of Labour FAQs (March 2026) confirm an 11-month engagement does not qualify.
Termination on expiry or non-renewal of the contract is not retrenchment. Early termination is a separate matter and must follow the contract and the law.
The contract should state the start date, duration, role, reporting and pay. Renewals are allowed and should be documented each time.
Rules continue to be clarified through Ministry FAQs and state rules; TNSL applies the position in force when each contract is issued. Position as of November 2026; this is general information, not legal advice.
One partner from the first hire to every month’s payroll.
Roles, numbers, shifts, wages and start dates agreed upfront, with a plan for peaks and replacements.
Local sourcing through field networks, skill centres, job portals and referrals, with checks on skills, documents and fitness.
Appointment letters, PF and ESI registration, induction and safety briefing before day one.
Attendance, payroll, statutory deposits and registers every month, with challans and records shared as agreed.
